BayStar Outboard Side Splashwell Mount HC4670 – Installation Guide
N.B. Unbalanced cylinders have unequal wheel turns. When the helm is turned one turn, a certain volume of fluid is pumped into the cylinder. On one side of an unbalanced cylinder piston is the push rod, which reduces the effective cylinder volume. The cylinder area on the other side of the piston has no push rod. The rod side of the piston will move faster per turn of the wheel because less space is available for fluid than on the side with no rod. Always bleed unbalanced cylinders fully retracted.
This listing is for the cylinder only. Available in a kit.
Boat Hut Insight
While the unbalanced cylinder design may sound like a minor technical detail, it’s actually quite important for the feel of your steering. Because the rod side moves faster, you’ll notice a subtle difference in resistance and responsiveness depending on the direction you turn the wheel. For those who prefer a consistent feel, this might take some getting used to. Also, when installing in a splashwell, ensure the mounting position allows for easy access to bleed the cylinder fully — it’s a step often overlooked but critical for smooth steering performance. Lastly, if you’re upgrading from a mechanical steering system, this hydraulic solution will drastically reduce helm effort, but remember to check compatibility with your engine’s tilt tube for a seamless fit.
