Types of Caravan Toilets We Stock
Portable caravan toilets (sometimes called Porta Pottis) are self-contained units with a freshwater flush tank on top and a waste tank on the bottom. They don’t require any plumbing connection, which makes them easy to position and move around. Most portable caravan toilets weigh under 5 kg when empty, making them manageable for one person to carry and empty.
Permanently installed caravan toilets are fixed units that connect to your caravan’s existing water supply and an external waste cassette. These look and function closer to a household toilet. They’re better suited to caravans that have a dedicated bathroom space and plumbing already in place.
Macerator pump toilets use a separate toilet bowl and waste tank, with the waste moved through the system using a macerator pump. They are commonly available in 12-volt or 24-volt versions and are similar to toilet systems used on boats. Quiet flush options are also available for a quieter operation.Â
Portable vs Installed: Which One Suits Your Setup?
A portable toilet can be a good option if your caravan doesn’t have a dedicated bathroom, you regularly camp away from dump points, or you want the flexibility to store the toilet when it isn’t needed. Larger-capacity models are particularly useful for longer stays where emptying the tank isn’t convenient.
An installed toilet makes more sense when your caravan already has a bathroom. It offers a permanent fixture that functions more similarly to the one you use at home. Installation is generally straightforward, whether you choose to do it yourself or have someone install it for you.
Maintenance and Upkeep
A caravan toilet is easy to maintain. With regular cleaning, the right toilet chemicals and a little care with the seals and valves, you can keep it in top working condition.
The most important consideration is using the right products for the toilet. A suitable toilet chemical in the waste tank helps break down waste and control odours, while a freshwater treatment can help keep a separated flush tank clean between uses.
After each trip, empty and rinse the waste tank and flush the freshwater tank to remove any residue. If the toilet is going to be stored for a while, leaving the tanks open to air can help prevent unpleasant smells.
